How to screen record on Mac
- Choose whether to record your microphone and tab sound.
- Click "Start recording" and choose the screen, a window or a tab.
- Click "Stop" and download the MP4.
The built-in way: Shift-Command-5
macOS does not record the sound coming from your Mac this way. Sharing a Chrome tab here can include that tab's sound, which covers most needs: a video call in the browser, a web demo, a YouTube clip you are commenting on.
- Press Shift-Command-5 and choose "Record Entire Screen" or "Record Selected Portion".
- Under Options, pick a microphone if you want your voice.
- Click Record, then the stop button in the menu bar. The file is a MOV on your desktop.
MOV vs MP4
Mac screen recordings are MOV files, which Windows users and some websites cannot play. Vidverter records MP4 directly. Already have a MOV? Convert it with MOV to MP4.
What you get
- Records the whole screen, one window or a single browser tab, with your microphone and (where the browser allows it) the sound of the tab or system.
- Saves an MP4 straight to your computer: no upload, no account, no watermark.
- Free recordings last up to 5 minutes in 1080p; Pro removes the time limit and records in up to 4K at 60 fps.
Frequently asked questions
Can it record system audio on a Mac?
Browsers on macOS can capture the sound of a shared tab. For sound from other apps, macOS itself needs extra software; for browser content, share the tab and tick "Share tab audio".
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Vidverter runs entirely in your browser and uses your device's own video encoders. Files never leave your computer or phone, so it is safe for private recordings, and there is no upload or download wait.
The browser asks for permission. Is that normal?
Yes. The first time, macOS asks you to allow screen recording for your browser in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording. Restart the browser after allowing it.
